Very Large Hadron Collider Physics and Detector Team

Abstract

One of the options for an accelerator beyond the LHC is a hadron collider with higher energy. Work is going on to explore accelerator technologies that would make such a machine feasible. This team will concentrate on the physics and detector issues associated with a hadron collider with an energy in the center of mass of the order of 100 to 200 TeV.


A VLHC Study Group was started at Fermilab in April 1997.

The goal is to produce a VLHC Design Study that will eventually leads to an R&D effort. The study will include both the low field and high field accelerator options.

The effort is organized around 4 teams with Ernie Malamud as coordinator:

  1. Accelerator Physics Team, team leader: Shekhar Mishra,.
  2. Accelerator Systems Team, team leader: Bill Foster.
  3. Construction and Installation Team, team leader: Joe Lach.
  4. Physics and Detector Team, team leader: Dmitri Denisov (Stéphane Keller is not co-leader of this team anymore since 1/1/98).

The VLHC was part of the Fermilab presentation to the HEPAP Subpanel that took place at Fermilab in August 1997 and received the support of the subpanel in its report.
